Elizabeth

Brussels, Austria

Well we left 95+ degree weather in Paris to come here to 55 degree and rainy weather. But I am by no means complaining! I love this city! The culture here is amazing. Even the little things such as the architecture and the streets are captivating.

We arrived here on Tuesday with absolutely no problem. The train ride from Brussels to here was only about an hour (it went over 100 km+ p/h!). Our hotel here is a nice change from the hotel in the "hood" we had in Paris. It is situated right next to a beautiful park (Park Elisabeth) and right across the street from a GIANT Basilica. So every morning we get to take a nice stroll through the park to the metro stop.

The first day we arrived was a rather quiet day. We stayed close to the hotel and explored that area (a bit north of the actual city of Brussels (about a 20 min. metro ride)) We tried to visit the Basilica but it was closed so we strolled around in the rain and actually had Vietnamese food for dinner. Ooops I know we should of had Belgian food but oh well...

Wednesday we were off and running. We went to the Grand place, which is the main highlight of the city of Brussels. We visited the Belgian Beer museum, the Belgium Museum, the Cathedrale St-Michel et Ste-Gudule, and the museum of Musical Instruments. My favorite was definitely the cathedral and the Musical instrument museum. The stained glass in the cathedral was breathtaking and some of the musical instruments even date back to the 15th century. I almost got us kicked out of the museum though because for some odd reason the flash kept going off on the camera. We finished the night at a Belgian Beer Bar that boasts of having 2,500 beers (2004 of which they guarantee to be in stock at all times). I enjoyed some nice Belgian "Ice tea" ..

Today has been much slower. We went in the Basilica by our hotel this morning and then took the metro up to the Atonium. The Atonium is a giant Iron atom about twice the size of the McGovern house on Beaver Brook. We did not go up into the atom but my little "science geek" was in heaven. We then came back down to the Grand Place and went to the Mannekin Pis (the peeing boy). It was surprisingly very small but there was a massive crowd in front of the statue. Now we are just poking around and enjoying the city. We are going to sample some authentic Belgian food tonight, Mussels cooked in a wine sauce, and then head back to the Belgian Beer Bar. (Mussels are extreme I know but keep in mind we had Escargot in Paris)
